The Saints made a move to shore up their injury-riddled secondary on Tuesday, re-signing cornerback Leigh Torrence to fill an opening on their 53-man active roster.

Torrence, who was released last Saturday, was re-signed when strong safety Chris Reis was put on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. Torrence was needed because cornerback Tracy Porter, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, is expected to be out 3-to-4 weeks.

The Saints remained one safety short on the roster, but coach Sean Payton seemed optimistic that strong safety Roman Harper, who did not play in last week's game with Carolina because of a hamstring injury, and Pierson Prioleau, who bruised a lung in the game, may be ready for Sunday.

After sputtering in their first four games, the Saints offense may find the Cardinals' porous defense to be the cure for its ills. The Saints enjoyed great success in a 45-14 blowout of the Cardinals in the playoffs last January and the Cards are proving to be just as vulnerable so far this season. They rank 29th in total defense—including 30th against the run and 22nd against the pass. They also rank 31st in giving up 29.5 points a game, which is good news for a Saints' offense that's averaging just 19.8 points per game. Defensively, the Saints will try to shut down the run and make either Derek Anderson or Max Hall beat them with a passing game that ranks 30th.

The Cardinals must be able to run the ball to win. To do that, the defense has to play well and keep this game close. It has not done that against good teams. Even though rookie Max Hall will start at quarterback, the Cardinals will take some shots deep. The Saints likely will use many blitzes to get to Hall. He needs some simple checkdowns, and he must not be afraid to run the ball a handful of times in the game.
